Ejiao has been a quality nourishing supplement since ancient times, known as "the holy medicine for blood replenishment," and is one of the three major supplements in China, along with ginseng and pilose antler. Ejiao, a traditional Chinese medicine made from donkey hide, has the effects of nourishing yin, hemostasis, replenishing blood, regulating menstruation, and stabilizing pregnancy. Modern research has further confirmed that Ejiao can effectively improve immunity. Ejiao contains a large amount of protein and 18 amino acids, which regulate the balance of human metabolism and promote blood production and replenishment.
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Ejiao was famous for its nourishing and curative effects, and it was deeply tied to Empress Dowager Cixi. At that time, Consort Yi had difficulty conceiving, but unfortunately she developed "hemorrhagic diseases." Though she sought medical treatment from all directions, the treatments were ineffective, leading to habitual miscarriage. At this time, a secretary of the Ministry of Revenue from Dong'e County, knowing that the empress was ill and not recovering, took the risk of being executed and recommended the Ejiao produced by "Deng's Shude Hall" in Dong'e to the emperor and Consort Yi. After taking Ejiao, Consort Yi indeed cured her "hemorrhagic diseases" and gave birth to a boy, who later became Emperor Tongzhi.
Therefore, Emperor Xianfeng was greatly pleased and gave Deng Fa, the owner of Deng's Shude Hall, three gifts: one was a yellow jacket of the fourth-rank official's uniform; the second was a palace pass, allowing the owner of Shude Hall to enter the palace and present Ejiao to the emperor; the third was a "Fu" character given to Dong'e Ejiao, and Shude Hall's Ejiao was designated as "tribute Ejiao." Deng's Shude Hall printed the "Fu" character on Ejiao as a mark. This Ejiao with the "Fu" character mark was not only presented to the imperial court every year, but also sold in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions.
In the 10th year of Tongzhi (1871), the imperial court appointed an imperial envoy to oversee the production of Ejiao at Shude Hall, and this Ejiao was called "Jiutian Tribute Ejiao." Later, Consort Yi, mother of the emperor, was promoted to Empress Dowager Cixi. Empress Dowager Cixi took Ejiao produced in Dong'e all year round. It is said that Empress Dowager Cixi, who was already in her sixties, still looked like she was in her thirties or forties. Among them, Ejiao played a crucial role and was her secret recipe for preserving her youthful appearance. Until now, Ejiao has become a necessity for women's health maintenance.

01 The donkey hide is soaked in water, with the water being changed 1-2 times daily, until it is ready for hair removal. The hair is then scraped off, and the hide is cut into small pieces. After that, it is soaked again in clean water, similar to the previous soaking process, for approximately 2-5 days. Finally, it is placed in a pot with water.
02 The donkey hide is simmered for approximately 3 days and nights until the liquid becomes thick and concentrated. The thickened liquid is then removed, water is added, and the process is repeated 5-6 times until the gelatin is fully extracted and impurities are removed.
The extracted gelatin solution is filtered (or a small amount of alum powder is added) and left to settle so that impurities can precipitate. The clear gelatin solution is then filtered and simmered over low heat to concentrate it into a thick paste. Alternatively, a small amount of yellow wine and rock sugar can be added two hours before the gelatin is fully extracted. The gelatin is poured into gelatin molds and allowed to naturally cool and solidify. It is then cut into rectangular blocks and dried in a shaded area. Each block weighs approximately 1 or 2 taels, and small pieces weigh around 1.5 qian.
The production process of Dong'e E Jiao involves more than 50 steps, including whole skin preparation, hair removal, and simmering. All the steps are performed manually, with the simmering and drying processes being particularly complex. Skills such as hanging beads, oil pounding, and monkey hanging require considerable expertise, and it takes about six to seven years to master the techniques. The production techniques of Dong'e E Jiao are classified as one of the first batch of technology confidentiality projects by the National Medical Products Administration.
